Type Locality and Naming

The type section is named in 1943 by Zhang Lixu and is located in Dahongshilizi, Nanpiao, Liaoning Province.

Lithology and Thickness

Lower section is purple-red, purple gray with gray-white sandstone, siltstone, and sandy shale. Upper section is light purple, purple-red siltstone with sandy shale and sandstone, and the upper part has more sandstones. The thickness is 452 m.

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

At the bottom, a thin layer of gray-purple pebbly sandstone is conformable contact with the underlying Upper Permian Sunjiagou Fm

Upper contact

At the top, a thin layer of gray-purple pebbly sandstone is in false conformable contact with the overlying Houfulongshan Fm

Regional extent

This group is mainly distributed in the area from Nanpiao Shaguotun to Fulong Mountain in Liaoning. It is also exposed in Shimengou of Chaoyang Changbaoyingzi, Beipiaodong Kuntouyingzi, Chaoyang Xidayingzi and Xilinzhangzi. The general distribution law is that the lithology becomes thicker from south to north. In the Nanpiao area, from the Fulong Mountain to the northeast to Shaguotun, to the southwest to Sanjiazi and other places, there is a trend of thinning.

Age 

It was named the Hongla Formation when it was named, and the age was Late Permian-Triassic; Zhao Jinke was renamed Hongla Formation in 1962, and the age was positioned in the late Late Permian; in 1982, Zhang Wu et al. defined it as the early Early Triassic.
